Ride.
Your lesson, with a trainer, on one of the barn's lesson horses. Ask us what the first lesson covers.
Paying: online or at the barn. A private lesson is $75 an hour.
What to wear
What to wear, and why.
A riding helmet
Ask us whether to bring your own. If you buy one, choose one made for riding, certified to ASTM/SEI standards. A bike helmet isn't made for riding.
Boots with a small heel
A small heel helps keep your foot from sliding through the stirrup. No sneakers, sandals or open toes.
Long pants
Jeans, leggings or riding pants. Shorts let the saddle rub your legs.
A fitted top, in layers
Nothing loose that can catch, and layers you can take off as you warm up.
Hair tied back, no dangling jewelry
Loose hair gets in your eyes, and jewelry can catch.
No riding helmet or boots yet? Ask us before you buy.
Bring water, especially in summer.

A private lesson
One rider and one trainer. Nobody else to keep up with.
A barn horse
Beginners ride one of the barn's own lesson horses. You don't need your own.
A covered arena
Out of the sun and the rain, with lights for evening riding.
Adults, new or coming back
You're as welcome as the children, whether you've never sat on a horse or you're coming back after years away. A private lesson is yours alone, so the pace is yours.
